Bayer CropScience supports German Agro Action to alleviate hunger in Kenya
Bayer CropScience donates over 5 million Kenya Shillings to support drought victims

Nairobi (Kenya) – In consideration of several million people in Kenya still suffering from the aftermath of a long lasting drought and years of insufficient rain, Bayer CropScience has donated ca. 5.5 million Kenya Shillings (EUR 60,000) to the German Agro Action (Welthungerhilfe) to aid the organization’s support of drought victims.
Hans-Joachim Wegfahrt, managing director and head of Bayer CropScience East Africa, handed over the cheque to the resident representative of the German Agro Action in Kenya, Mrs. Iris Krebber. The presentation took place at the Nairobi headquarters of Bayer East Africa in the presence of Walter Johannes Lindner, the German ambassador to Kenya.
Kenya has been going through one of the most severe droughts in its recent history. Even though the rains have now set in, over two million Kenyans are still threatened by famine. In their despair, people have eaten the seed which they now lack for sowing. Many cattle, a dominant source of livelihood in Kenya, have died due to a shortage of feed and water and subsequent diseases.
The long lasting drought has not only affected millions of Kenyans. It has also substantially slowed down the country’s economy. As a result of increasing cost for food and dairy products, inflation has gone up to some 20 percent.

Bayer CropScience spendet über 5 Millionen Kenianische Schillinge für Opfer der Dürre
Nairobi (Kenya) – Angesichts der Millionen von Menschen, die in Kenia noch immer unter den Folgen der jüngsten Dürrekatastrophe und jahrelangen Perioden der Niederschlagsarmut leiden, unterstützt Bayer CropScience den Einsatz der Deutschen Welthungerhilfe im Kampf gegen den Hunger in Kenia mit umgerechnet etwa 5.5 Millionen Kenia Schillingen (60.000 Euro).
Der Geschäftsführer und Leiter von Bayer CropScience in Ostafrika, Hans-Joachim Wegfahrt, überreichte den Scheck an die Repräsentantin der Deutschen Welthungerhilfe in Kenia, Frau Iris Krebber. Die Übergabe erfolgte in der Bayer Zentrale in Kenia im Beisein des deutschen Botschafters Walter Johannes Lindner.
Kenia ging bis vor kurzem durch eine der größten und längsten Dürreperioden seiner jüngeren Geschichte. Obwohl die Regenzeit mittlerweile eingesetzt hat, haben über zwei Millionen Kenianer nicht genug zu essen. In ihrer Not aßen die Menschen das Saatgut, das ihnen nun für die Aussaat von Nahrungsmittelpflanzen fehlt. Große Teile der Viehbestände, auf denen der Lebensunterhalt von Nomaden in Kenia beruht, sind aufgrund der Futter- und Wasserknappheit sowie daraus folgender Krankheiten verendet.
Der lang andauernde Regenmangel hat nicht nur Millionen von Kenianern zugesetzt, sondern auch der Wirtschaftsentwicklung des Landes geschadet und das Wachstum erheblich verlangsamt. Als Folge der steigenden Kosten für Nahrungsmittel und Milchprodukte ist die Inflation auf etwa 20 Prozent gestiegen.
