Bayer CropScience comments on the deregulation of LLRICE601 in the USA
Research Triangle Park, N.C. USA – Bayer CropScience welcomes the November 24, 2006 decision by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to deregulate LLRICE601. The deregulation confirms the preliminary decision of USDA, published on September 8, 2006, that LLRICE601 does not pose any environmental concerns and should no longer be regulated.
Bayer CropScience submitted LLRICE601 for deregulation as part of the company’s on-going cooperation with USDA after traces of the herbicide-tolerant rice were found at very low levels in samples of commercial long-grain rice. The company does not intend to commercialize LLRICE601.
The protein in the company’s herbicide-tolerant rice varieties, including LLRICE601, is well known to regulators, who have affirmed the rice poses no human health or environmental concern. The protein has been approved for food use in a number of crops by regulators in many countries, including Canada, the European Union, Japan, Mexico and the United States.
