Plant Biotechnology
Plant biotechnology for sustainable and responsible agriculture
|
Bayer CropScience’s employs and endorses the responsible use of plant biotechnology with the aim to improve the productivity and quality of agricultural crops. This technology complements traditional plant breeding and includes modern breeding tools such as marker-assisted breeding and genetic engineering. Through plant biotechnology, the yield and quality of food, feed, fiber and renewable raw materials can be enhanced in an environmentally friendly way. Plants can be made more resistant to pests or better able to withstand environmental stress conditions such as heat or cold, flooding, shortage of water or saline soils. |
Plant biotechnology can positively impact the
quantity and quality of human and animal nutrition,
properties of natural fibers and renewable raw materials,
resource efficient supply of agricultural products,
competitiveness and affordability of agricultural products,
income and quality of lives of farmers,
livelihood of smallholder farmers in developing and emerging economies,
preservation of wildlife habitats and biodiversity by reducing pressure to bring more farm land into cultivation,
use of integrated crop management practices, more targeted crop protection, and use of limited and no-till agricultural practices for soil protection.
Plant biotechnology adds significantly to our knowledge and understanding of plants and their genetic construction. The technology enables the breeding of crops with superior vigor and health, while improving the efficiency of breeding cycles. It can be used for the selection of desirable features from native plant populations and their introduction into agricultural field crops.
Bayer CropScience uses plant biotechnology in a responsible way and in full accordance with all applicable laws, regulations and industry standards. As part of the global society we carefully listen and respect the opinions of our key stakeholders, taking an active interest in an open-minded dialog.
